Test Drive: Hyundai Palisade

New Generation – Hyundai Palisade

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade, a three-row, front-wheel drive SUV, is Hyundai’s largest vehicle. It easily seats up to eight adults, while having the upscale look and feel of a more expensive vehicle.

The overall ride is comfortable and controlled. Performance from the 3.8-liter V-6 engine is certainly up to the task of moving the Palisade, with plenty of power in reserve. I averaged 26 mpg after several hundred miles of driving, several miles better than the stated Environmental Protection Agency average.

Safety is addressed with a full suite of features, including automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping and a rear passenger alert system that warns if someone or something is left in the rear seating area. One interesting feature involves the turn signal: When it’s activated, a video feed of the side of the vehicle temporarily replaces the tachometer or speedometer.

There was a time when I would recommend Hyundai models because they were good values, despite their shortcomings. Today that’s not the case. The Palisade competes with the best vehicles in its class and – like all Hyundai models – adds value for the money.
