My First Car: Chad Green

Since making his major league debut in 2016, Chad Green of the New York Yankees has emerged as one of the best relief pitchers in baseball. And though he now calls the Big Apple home, he still fondly remembers cruising around his hometown of Effingham, Ill., with his twin brother.

What was your first car?

A 2001 black Chevy TrailBlazer.

How did you acquire it? 

I have a twin brother, and my parents bought it for us in about 2007, when we were 15. It had over 100,000 miles but it was completely loaded. We thought it was the greatest thing ever. And at that age, we pretty much went together everywhere, so we just needed one car. We just took turns driving.

What did you love most about your first car? 

It was perfect for what we needed. We played baseball, so we could just throw everything in the back seat; it didn’t really matter where it went. I kind of miss it now. I would drive it if it would still run. I’m sure it’s got a lot of miles now, if it even still exists.

Was there anything you didn’t like about it? 

I think the cruise control didn’t work, so that was the worst part. If we had to drive anywhere more than 30 minutes, it was pretty rough.

What is your favorite memory of the car?

Just cruising around for the first time was cool. It was nice to be able to share that experience with my brother, so looking back that was probably the coolest moment.

What happened to it? 

I have no idea. I think we might have sold it back to the dealership. Somebody might have bought it for pretty cheap. It had a lot of miles on it. We were going away for college so we were driving a lot and needed something more reliable.
