The best way to know for sure if your auto insurance coverage includes rentals is to speak with your insurance agent. He or she can explain how your coverage translates to a rental vehicle.
For example, your coverage may only apply for up to 30 days. Or your insurer may or may not cover a loss-of-use fee charged by some rental companies to make up for the time a damaged vehicle is out of commission.
You may also want to check with your credit card company. Some companies offer coverage if you use your credit card to pay for your rental.
Should you decide to purchase the rental companyās coverage, youāll be buying whatās called a collision damage waiver. Itās not insurance; itās an agreement on behalf of the rental company not to make a claim against you or your insurance company if the rental vehicle is damaged or stolen.
