Alice Corkery was excited last week after making arrangements to have 2,468 articles of warm clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats and socks – lots of socks – delivered to the local Boys & Girls Club.
These were the spoils of the warm-clothing drive at the AAA Garden City, N.Y., branch, where Alice is assistant manager. AAA’s second annual monthlong drive was an overwhelming success, with 17,578 items collected in branches across the Northeast. Garden City collected the most items, thanks in large part to a member’s donation of 2,000 pairs of Bombas socks.
“Our members brought us really top-notch clothing. The kids will have some beautiful things to wear,” Alice said.
Branches everywhere reported increased member participation over the previous year and more donations of newly purchased or handmade clothing.
Keith Furfure, district branch manager in Burlington, Mass., said his branch collected 100 articles of clothing last year that were mostly used. This year, members brought in more than 700 items, many of which still had tags on them.
“One woman came in with five brand-new jackets. I asked her if I could get her name and take a picture,” Keith said. “Her response was, ‘I do not want any recognition at all. For a child to not have a jacket and to be cold brings tears to my eyes.’”
The next territory-wide event is a spring food drive March 20-April 3.
