About two hours into our first e-bike ride, my wife pulled to the shoulder for a water break and rendered her verdict on the experience: āThese do kind of take the āsuckinessā out of biking, donāt they?ā
At that moment we were astride a pair of e-bikes loaned to us by Priority Bicycles and BMC Bikes, two of the dozens of manufacturers now selling electric road, mountain and special-use bikes. For our first-ever e-bike outing, we chose to ride 20 miles to a local favorite restaurant ā a journey that on any other day we would have unquestionably taken by car.
Are e-bikes worth it? That’s up to you to decide.
What Itās Like to Ride an E-Bike
Rhode Island is generally flat, but the particular route we were on was one we had ridden on non-powered bikes before, so we knew it included several uncharacteristically challenging hills that could turn an otherwise pleasant ride into a bit of a slog.
The e-bikes made it easy. Big hill ahead? Click up the pedal assist for a boost that makes the climb as easy as riding on level ground. Lagging a bit on the way home? Let the onboard electric motor do a little more of the work to give your legs a break.
The first thing you need to know about e-bikes: Youāre not just along for the ride. Pedaling could still be very much part of the experience, although unlike with a regular bike, you have the option to choose whether you want a little or a lot of help along the way.
āYou are able to enjoy your ride with less effort and also ride farther,ā said David Gloeckler, senior e-bike product manager at BMC. āIt enables you to have a more relaxed and often faster commute, and of course, there are a lot of environmental benefits.ā
āA big misconception is that e-bikes are cheating, or that youāre lazy if you ride one,ā said Connor Swegle, co-founder of Priority Bicycles. āYou still have to put in the work, but you can extend the benefits you get from riding a regular bike. If you take a 500-mile ride by e-bike, not to say itās easy, but you can enjoy the experience more.ā And, as Gloeckler pointed out, riding an e-bike is a far better cardiovascular workout than driving a car.
Not all e-bikes are created equal. Our loaners included one cruiser-style road bike and a hybrid, while electric mountain bikes and bikes designed specifically for urban environments, including commuter and cargo bikes, also help comprise the $43 billion global e-bike market.
Alicia Applegate, general manager of cycle at REI, said that e-bikes can also be a viable alternative to a car for running errands or visiting places inaccessible to larger vehicles; in the RV community, e-bikes are increasingly taking the place of towed cars or motorcycles for exploring beyond the campground.
āE-bikes make cycling accessible to a wider range of people that may be deterred by the effort needed for traditional biking,ā said Applegate. āThis is really beneficial to those with limited mobility and provides an opportunity for individuals to stay active and engaged with the outdoors.ā
How Much Is an E-Bike?
E-bikes arenāt cheap. With prices ranging into thousands of dollars, the cost is comparable to that of a high-end conventional bicycle. And with so many different types of bikes on the market, it takes a bit of research to find the e-bike that best suits your personal needs.
E-Bike Range
On our test ride, I was pedaling along with plenty of battery life to spare when my wife raised the alarm that she was in the red. We managed to get home OK, but the brief scare was a reminder that, as with electric cars, range is an important factor to consider when buying an e-bike.
Ranges of 30-75 miles on a charge are typical. But the battery life can be affected by factors like riding conditions (hills, for example), air temperature, speed, and, of course, how often you engage the motor for assistance.
It should also be noted that improper charging and storage increases the risk of battery fire. Learn how to safely charge and store e-bikes, and how to make sure your e-bikeās battery has the appropriate certifications.
E-Bike Laws and Safety
Legally, e-bikes come in three classes, and itās important to know which one youāre looking at because states have different rules depending upon which class youāre riding.
Class 1 e-bikes are equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling. The pedal assist stops when speed reaches 20 mph; these bikes have no throttle.
Class 2 e-bikes, dubbed āthrottle-assistā e-bikes, come with a motor that can be activated using a throttle, even without pedaling. Again, the motor assistance stops when the bike reaches 20 mph.
Class 3 e-bikes provide assistance only when the rider is pedaling, but the motor can aid pedaling up to 28 mph.
We found the user learning curve to be relatively short, but e-bikes have been involved in crashes, including fatal ones. Motor assistance means that you can quickly find yourself riding along at speeds higher than youād easily attain by your own pedal power, so extra safety precautions are in order.
āRiders should always respect that an e-bike has more power and weight than a non-powered bike,ā said Gloeckler. āEvery rider should take the time to learn how to brake and handle their bike, especially if they are just starting out, and always make sure the bike and safety gear are in good condition and well maintained.ā
āHave a good helmet and wear it,ā said Swegle, who also recommends equipping your bike with a bell or horn, front and rear lights (LED lights are typically standard on e-bikes) and a mirror. Some states specifically require e-bike riders to wear helmets, even if they donāt do the same for regular bikes.
Like bicylists, e-bike riders also need to follow the rules of the road. Keep in mind that sidewalks are generally prohibited for bikes except for young riders. AAA recommends that e-bike riders should obey traffic signals, ride with traffic and signal turns. Itās especially important for e-bike riders to yield to pedestrians, who are vulnerable in any crash with a heavier vehicle. And just because e-bike riders can go a certain speed doesnāt mean they should. Drivers and riders alike should follow the speed limit and slow their speeds in school zones and dense urban areas.
State laws about where you can ride an e-bike vary, and some states have different regulations for different classes of e-bikes. āAlthough e-bikes are allowed on many trails across the country, they still are not allowed everywhere,ā said Applegate, who advises checking on restrictions before you head out for a road or trail ride.
So, Are E-Bikes Worth It?
Ridden responsibly, an e-bike can greatly expand your perception of whatās possible to do on two wheels ā or get you back in the saddle if you previously felt that age or ability had closed the door on cycling.
āPure joyā is one of the biggest attributes of e-biking, said Applegate. āIf you have not ridden an e-bike yet, I would highly recommend trying one,ā she said. “It will definitely put a smile on your face.ā

As a regular bike rider on the Cape Cod rail trail I get mocked at being slow by e bikers.
They whiz buy saying, “hey old man.”
They should be banned on bike trails.
You neglected to mention that an e-bike can be a godsend for someone with mobility issues. My wife had knee replacement surgery and had difficulty riding a traditional bike afterwards. Now an e-bike lets her enjoy riding again!
E-Bikes in NYC. Terrifying for pedestrians! Great outside of NYC. NY has a fabulous network of bike paths. Can bike from NYC to Buffalo or to the Canadian border.
I’m a Senior citizen. I bought an ebike in August of 2022. I use it for recreation, and I haven’t had so much fun in years! I can ‘effortlessly’ drive 20-30 miles on a charge and use it nearly every day. Its only drawback is that in the climate in which I live I can only use it 6-7 months per year. I look forward to my daily rides. I would highly recommend for some FUN exercise or for a local commute. If you’re an experienced bike rider, go for it!
My wife and I purchased 2 E-bikes in 2020 during the pandemic. BEST PURCHASE I EVER MADE!! I was hesitant because of the cost, but my wife and I can finally ride together. Before e-bikes, she couldnāt keep up with me and I canāt ride that slow.
Now, she smokes me on the hills both up and down and just laughs as sheās passing me!
By the way; weāre both in our 60ās, so no super athleteās here! Iāve lost weight. Weāve seen some amazing scenery all over New England. We plan biking road trips. I cover about 700 miles a year, something I could never do on a conventional bike. Always wear a helmet no matter how much you hate it; it saved me once, thatās good enough for me!
These bikes have brought us closer, even after 40 years of marriageā¦.!!!!
As a long time city cyclist, I consider E-bikes to be a scourge. Not because of the bikes themselves, but because how they are ridden. Of course the fact that they can go much faster than a pedaled bike in itself poses dangers, and of course the fact that they are virtually completely silent adds to the danger, but the worst thing in my mind is that E-bike riders NEVER follow the basic courtesy of signaling with a bell before passingāand often pass on the right sideāof a slower bike. It is deplorable.
I think bike riding in NYC has become as dangerous or even more dangerous than it was before the prevalence of dedicated bike lanes.
I’d be interested, but:
No mention of the batteries and whether they’re safe.
Is it safe to charge the bike indoors? (e.g. in the garage)
Is it safe to leave the bike charging (indoors) so that it’s charged when I need it? (or do I need to remember to go back out and unplug it once it’s charged?)
Is it safe to have the bike (and battery) shipped?
The batteries on ebikes can be removed from the bike and charged indoors. Use the factory recommended charger, sold with each bike and it will shut off when the battery is fully charged. There are numerous videos about ebikes on youtube. Videos about motor sizes, ranges, styles, and maintenance of bikes and batteries can be a tremendous help in determining one’s decision to buy one.
You donāt live in NYC. They are a menace. No insurance, no enforcement of traffic laws, no use of bike lanes. They are like underpowered motorcycles. Without regulation and enforcement they are a menace.
How much do e-bikes weigh? I can fit 2 conventional pedal powered bikes on my trunk mounted rack. Can I still fit 2 on a trunk mounted rack?
Ebikes are heavy. They weigh 50-70 lbs. without the battery which is about 8-10 lbs. A heavy duty ebike rack is required to transport an ebike on a car or truck.
I would like an e-bike but car drivers have no respect for motorcycles let alone an e-bike in Yonkers, NY. I thinks more bicycle lanes are needed. It feel it is not feasible at this time. Also need ensure that the batteries do not cause a fire.
“Respect”?????? Its motorcyclist and e-bike riders who disobey the rules of the road. You guy’s weave in and out of traffic and go in the wrong direction on city streets. You treat pedestrians like they are bowling pins, running them over and disappearing into the traffic.

There are people looking to get hit. If someone takes an intentional
dump over the hood of my car, am I responsible? Are there ordinances in
place protecting the responsible driver that insures themselves? Motorized
or not.
Agree…car drivers have insurance but not these bike people. Who is willing to invest in a bike versus a car in a northern cold wet climate? It’s not like anyone is saving the planet by opting out.
Iāve been commuting with my e bike for almost two months. Itās definitely worth it! Itās my first e bike, so I bought the cheapest one I could find and I have no issues with it. You donāt have to spend thousands of dollars.
E-BIKES ARE GREAT IF YOU WANT TO BURN DOWN YOUR HOUSE WHILE CHARGING THEM. LIKE ELECTRIC CARS, THEY WILL NEVER BE AS GOOD OR AS COST EFFICIENT AS DRIVING A CAS CAR OR RIDING A CONVENTIONAL PEDAL BIKE.
It’s rare when the batteries blow up or catch on fire. Like all devices or machinery with re-chargable batteries, the benefits outweigh the possible risks of fire or explosion.
